Food Additives

Limiting unnecessary food additives can be an important part of maintaining a healthy diet and supporting long-term well-being. Many commercially prepared foods contain preservatives, artificial colors, flavorings, sweeteners, and other additives intended to improve appearance, taste, texture, or shelf life. Although many food additives have been evaluated for safety and do not necessarily pose a health risk at approved levels, some may cause adverse reactions in sensitive individuals, and certain additives or their long-term effects remain subjects of scientific investigation. Highly processed foods may also contain excessive amounts of sodium, added sugars, and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease when consumed regularly. By choosing fresh, minimally processed ingredients and preparing more meals at home, we can better control what goes into our food, reduce unnecessary additives, and improve the overall nutritional quality of our diet. Within the Food Survivability Index, evaluating food additives encourages us to select foods that support good health not just today, but throughout a long and healthy life.

Scoring System

Score Rating Description
5 None/Minimal Whole foods, no additives, or only basic ingredients like salt, vinegar, oil, spices
4 Low Few common additives, mostly harmless stabilizers or natural preservatives
3 Moderate-Low Several additives, but no major red flags; sodium/sugar still reasonable
2 Moderate Many additives, artificial flavors/colors, preservatives, or high sodium
1 High Multiple concerning additives, very high sodium, refined oils/sugars, heavy processing
0 Very High Long additive list plus red flags such as processed-meat preservatives, artificial colors, excess sodium, or additives the eater reacts poorly to

Scoring Method

Start with a score of 5

1. the ingredient list has more than 5 additives
2. contains artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners
3. very high in sodium
4. contains processed-meat preservatives such as sodium nitrite/nitrate
5. contains many highly processed ingredients, such as hydrogenated
oils, multiple gums, emulsifiers, or refined sweeteners
